In a world of perfect sanity, madness is the only freedom.

The Underworld of a Smart City (2018) speculates on potential societal implications of autonomous vehicles through two scenarios, a police chase and car crash.

Chaotic, unpredictable situations which are never rendered into glossy visualisations of autonomous futures and “smart cities” that are increasingly being pinned as the future of mobility.

The underworld of a smart city is glimpsed by installing self driving vehicles in these two familiar scenarios, with a neo-retro aesthetic that communicates a sense of genuine haphazard reality as opposed to clinical futurism.

The film features narration by J.G. Ballard, author of Crash (1973).
